Update: Fall 2008
This year, the CFA North Carolina Society decided to  launch an exciting new initiative, Investment Research Challenge – NC.  In the Challenge, a team of MBA/BBA students from the above universities will compete with each other on researching, writing, and presenting a report recommending a “Buy”, “Sell”, or “Hold” position on a publicly traded company.  The society will assist in providing education tools and research seminars; the goal being to provide a value-added real-world application of writing research reports to these students.

In December, the teams were assigned the same company to analyze (a company under followed by Wall Street). Students had access to the management team for one day. The teams were given a template to follow in completing their written analysis and report.  The CFA NC Society provides mentors for the teams and judges and graders that review and grade these reports. The finalists, will be in mid February.  Final NC competition will be held in late February. The winning team will then compete in NYC against the winners from the N.American challenges in mid March 2009. 

The purposes of the Challenge are to teach best practices in research to the next generation of analysts, offer experience in a real-world setting to complement students’ academic curriculum and provide an opportunity for experienced investment professionals and society members to give back.

Investment Research Challenge was originated and trademarked by the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) six years ago and is currently being replicated in Boston, Hong Kong, Texas and other regions in the US.  The CFA Institute is a sponsor of the Investment Research Challenge and assists each CFA society that decides to roll out a regional Challenge.
